Bathroom windows are unique, both in form and function. They need to let light into a small space, while at the same time, afford you privacy. Here's how to get the best of both worlds.
Every bathroom in my home has a window, some of them quite large. Our current master bathroom even has one in the shower. That doesn't seem so bad (hooray, natural light!), except the window looks directly out onto the porch right next to our front door.
Hello Mr. UPS man, don't mind me, I am just standing here taking a shower...
Obviously, we had to remedy these problems. Bathroom windows are a good thing! They let in light and help ventilate the bathroom when needed, but they can be inconvenient when you need to go about your bathroom business. Here is a wide variety of solutions for your bathroom privacy that fit a variety of budget needs.
At some point, everybody finds themselves wondering, "What is my design style?" Pinterest can sometimes be like putting your face in front of a fire hydrant gushing with design styles. Since online e-design has come into its own, there are loads of design style quizzes to choose from. To help you decide which ones to take (and to selfishly feed my design style quiz addiction), I took a lot of them. I'm here to let you know which ones are worth your time, and share my favorites!
I love the look of white trim and bamboo roman shades, but the problem is my window sizes are anything but standard. This is not a post about deceiving your landlord. This post is about updates you can make to your rental that more than likely don't need your landlord's permission. My husband and I are landlords. Rentals are a part of our full-time job; so here are some things WE wouldn't mind you doing if you lived in our rentals ... and I bet your landlord might feel the same way. If you're sick of ugly apartment cabinets and want to cover them, or just can't stand the light fixtures in your space, here are some simple ideas for you.
I love a Christmas tree basket so much more than a tree skirt. They finish off a tree with clean lines. My house is full of large storage baskets for toys, blankets, and all sorts of stuff. I really wanted to make one of them work, without cutting the basket, so I could use it as a basket again. The only problem was my artificial Christmas tree base was too big. Here is my simple, no-skills needed, DIY solution to make one of my wicker storage baskets work as a Christmas tree basket stand.

I love Christmas garland. I drape them on doorways, my fireplace, and even my staircase banister. A few years ago, I decided to buy all fresh evergreen lengths of Christmas garland, and I worked hard to drape them everywhere, following all the instructions to make sure they'd last. But two weeks later ... my garlands were dead and done.
The heater vents and the heat from our fireplace fires killed that greenery dead. Everyone told I should have waited until two weeks before Christmas before hanging real greenery, but I want my home to be decorated all Christmas season! I needed something a little more permanent, and the custom "fake" options where not cheap, ranging from $80-$300. So my solution was to take an inexpensive garland and make it look full, expensive, and as real as fake could possibly look.
I have been loving brass metalwork hurricanes lately, especially the ones from Anthropologie. While trolling the lighting aisles of the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store the light bulb went off...the one in my head that is. I could use a brass and glass 1980s light fixtures to make a brass hurricane. Here is how I made my knock off metal work hurricane.
