We've been talking a lot about money-saving cleaning tips and projects, Spring Cleaning checklists, and other ways of organizing your home this month, but it's time to focus on that one area we see, and use, every day: clothes closets!

Though often overlooked, this space sets the tone for the rest of your day: a messy closet adds chaos and stress, an organized closet promotes peace and calm.  We'd all prefer the latter, so let's get down to business.

First things first, we need to purge and pack!  Go through and be honest.  If you haven't worn it in over a year, chances are you probably won't this year.  Pull it out and put it in the "donate" pile.  Be brutal.  If your clothes no longer fit: donate.  Next, find those items that need to be mended.  A cardigan with a missing button?  Shoes with a broken lace?  Get those suckers fixed.  And finally, pull out those bulky Winter pieces and store them away until next year.  Your closet will thank your for the extra space.

Now for the fun part: organizing the clothes that made the cut!  There are a myriad of ways to go about it but, being a visual person, my favorite is organizing by color: ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet - followed by white, brown, grey, and black for the closet).  It's easy, looks great, and, let's face it, sometimes you just want to wear a certain hue.  (Today is a purple day for me!)

You can also organize by function/type of clothes, i.e. short sleeve shirts, dresses, long sleeves, etc.  The ultimate combo would be organizing by type and then color!  The most important thing of course is to develop a system that not only works for you, but will be easy for you to maintain.  If your organizational rules are too strict, it'll be much harder to stick with it in the long run.

So Curbliers, how do you organize your clothes?  Color?  Type?  Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments!

Ahh...To have a closet big enough to see into, much less orginize. LAst week we purged out 6 bags to go to donate, and 4 bags to toss, what a relief, though the closet is still very small. EJ
