How to: Purrfectly Simple DIY Cat Bed

by on Jan 5, 2021

I love my cat. I’m not shy about admitting that (I even mention it in my bio). I’m also not ashamed to say I think she’s the best cat in the world. Her name is Donut, but I also refer to her as “Angel Face” or “Precious Baby Kitty” (which drives my fiancé crazy, I’m sure). The cat drinks filtered water and has a basket full of toys. She’s one of the more spoiled cats out there, and leads a pretty cushy life (as evidenced by this plushy DIY cat bed I made especially for her).

A few months ago I unintentionally left a blanket on top of the dresser in the bedroom, and almost immediately Precious Baby Kitty claimed the spot as her own. Ever catering to her needs, I decided to create a more permanent DIY cat bed in lieu of the neglected blanket. This kitty cushion simple and minimal, and comfortable enough for even this picky princess.

Materials

  • 1 piece of comfortable fabric, measuring 20 x 22 inches (I used faux fur)
  • 1 piece of felt, measuring 20 x 22 inches
  • Polyester fiber fill
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery thread and large needle
  • Sewing machine, thread, and notions (or needle and thread if sewing by hand)
What you'll need to make this simple cat bed

Step

Make this DIY cat pillow

Lay the fabric and the felt together, right sides in. Pin along all sides, except for a 4-5 inch gap. Using a sewing machine or stitching by hand, sew along all sides, except for the gap.

She acts like a princess so treat her like one! How to make a luxe kitty bed.

Turn the bed inside out, and stuff with polyester fiber fill. Don’t over-stuff it! Use enough for your cat to be able to sit comfortably.

Step

Faux fur and felt make this minimal cat cushion.

Using a needle and thread, stitch the gap closed.

Using embroidery thread and a large needle, stitch through the middle of the pillow. This will create a dimple that you cat can snuggle in. Knot the embroidery thread on both sides of the bed. Done!

Donut was a little hesitant at first about the change of scenery, but after some coaxing (and catnip), she loves her refashioned perch. Now she spends all day on her DIY cat bed watching birds out the window.

She really does think she’s royalty. Thank goodness Donut isn’t my human child, otherwise she’d be a total brat. Looking for more fun pet projects? Check out our Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Irresistible DIY Catnip Stick Sock Toys.
