Last year I used silk ties to dye my eggs.  Wrap the tie around the egg and secure with rubber bands.  Boil eggs as if you were making hard-boiled.  Remove the tie when cold, and voila!  Here's an example guide. 

I didn't find it necessary to place in a pillow case or to cut the fabric.  It was a lot of fun getting fabric that didn't fit quite right for more interesting designs.  To do it on a budget, scour your local Good Will or thrift shope for ties.
