Halloween is right around the corner, which means that it's time to start thinking about costumes. And if you're like me, you probably like to subject your pets to ridiculous costumes too. And a sushi roll certainly fits that description. But it's seriously the cutest thing ever. Click through to check out my puggle modeling his new costume, and find out how to make your own version!
I used peach and green fabric pillows to make salmon and avocado, and the little pom poms are the fish roe. So let's get started!
Here's what you'll need for the costume (keep in mind that these measurements are for a size medium, for my 35 pound puggle... I'll tell you how to adjust the sizing later if your dog is smaller or larger):
- 1/2 yard of white faux fur
- 1/2 yard of black stretch fabric
- 1/2 yard of salmon colored cotton fabric
- 1/2 yard of green cotton fabric
- Assorted orange pom poms
- Stuffing or batting
- 5 inches of adhesive velcro
- 3 feet of elastic
- Hot glue gun
- Measuring tape
- Paint pen that matches your dog's color (optional)
- Sewing machine and white thread
Begin by cutting two pieces of peach fabric to size 10 x 12 inches. Optional: draw a chevron pattern onto one piece of fabric every two inches then sew over it with a large zig zag stitch.
For smaller and larger sizes, simply subtract or add 4 inches to these measurements respectively.
Th chevron pattern will make it look a bit more fish-like. Trim the ends of the loose threads.
Next, flip it over and draw a fish shape in pencil and cut through both pieces of fabric.
With right sides together, sew the two pieces together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Stop about 3 inches from the end, leaving a hole to insert the stuffing.
In the inside corners, you'll want to clip little slits as shown above so that everything lays flat once you turn it right side out.
Turn it right side out and begin filling it with stuffing or batting. I used the insides of an old pillow for mine. Be sure to under-stuff it so your dog doesn't have too much to wear on his back.
Fold the edges of the hole in on themselves and pin. Hand-sew it closed.
Next, cut two pieces of 10 x 14 inch green fabric. With right sides together, sew the two pieces together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Stop about 3 inches from the end, again leaving a hole to insert the stuffing. Add some stuffing and then hand-sew the hole closed as you did with the peach fabric.
Add or subtract 4 inches from each measurement for a size large or small respectively.
Next, you'll begin creating the seaweed and rice wrap. Cut a 14 x 36 inch piece of white faux fur. Fold it in half and sew down the edge with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Do the same with the black fabric, but cut it to 12 x 36 inches so that it ends up being a bit narrower than the white. Flatten them out so that the seams are hidden on the back.
For larger or smaller sizes: add or subtract 4 inches from the 14 inch measurement and add or subtract about 10 inches from the 36 inch measurement (it's best just to measure your dog's torso and then add about 10 inches for a small or 14 inches for a large).
Use the glue gun to attach the black piece to the white, making sure to center everything.
Center the black and white strip on top of the peach fish piece, gluing it down. Next, glue the peach piece to the green one. Then glue the pom poms to the top of the fish (on either side of the black and white roll).
Try the whole thing on your pooch, and pin it closed. Trim the ends so they overlap by one inch, and then attach the adhesive velcro on those overlapping pieces. Make sure that the male side of the velcro is on the outside edge of one end, and the female side is on the inside edge of the other end. If everything fits correctly, sew around the edges of the velcro pieces to secure them.
Cut three one foot pieces of elastic. Try the whole thing on your dog once more, and pin the ends of two pieces of elastic to the sushi roll by your dog's shoulders and one underneath by his or her chest. Wrap each one around the collar, and re-pin the other ends to the correct length. Make sure the whole thing is pulled as close to the collar as possible. Sew the elastic pieces to the sushi roll. Optional: you can color each piece of elastic with a paint pen which matches your dog to hide the elastic.
And that's it! People are sure to smile when they see it, and your pup will feel proud when he wins all the costume contests!
The whole thing is very light and soft, making it fairly comfortable for your furry friend.
It looks great from the side and the top... which is an important angle for a dog! You can also customize it with different fillings... Idaho roll anyone? Happy Halloween friends.
