The internet is a beautiful thing. Anything and everything exists there, including online shops that will sell and ship houseplants to your home. It’s basically an introverted millennial’s dream (that’s me, btw). I am fortunate enough to have a lot of nurseries and plant shops in my area, which is where most of my greens come from. I’d never considered that I could buy houseplants online, but after discovering how easy/cheap/non-confrontational it is, I have several green babies bookmarked on my computer. If you’re looking for new places to find greenery, here are 10 great sources for you to buy houseplants online.
The Sill: Based in Manhattan, this online retailer is so confidant about the quality of their plants, they guarantee the health of their greens for up to a year. In addition to a wide variety of specialty plants (like Staghorn Fern and Hoya Heart), they also sell stately and unique ceramics to house your new plant friends in.
Pistils Nursery: I’ve heard tales of their gorgeous storefront. That it’s like walking into the actual secret garden from that book, The Secret Garden. Their Instagram account is every millennials’ dream. They do plants pretty. And thankfully for the rest of us not living in Portland, Oregon, they do plants online.
Urban Outfitters – UO always surprises me with what they have available for home decor, and their selection of live plants is no different. While right now they just carry cacti, succulents, and air plants, they’re all cute and available for a reasonable price.
Etsy: While your mind might immediately go to homemade jewelry at the very mention of Etsy, there are several reputable nurseries peddling their petals there too. Some of the more popular online Etsy stores include Pretty in Green, Hirts Gardens, Houseplants Co., and Cactus Limon.
Amazon: They say Amazon has everything, and they’re not wrong. Amazon sells any houseplant you could ever wish for – but be cautious of who you buy from, as some plants may ship from far away places, meaning more time in the dark.
The Home Depot: It might seem silly to order a plant online from Home Depot… until you try and fit a 6′ tall palm tree into the back of your compact car and realize it can’t be done without tipping the plant completely on its side, and then you end up with a bunch of dirt all over the backseat of your vehicle. Not worth the fuss – get it shipped instead! The other bonus of being able to buy houseplants online is that there’s a larger variety than what appears to be in-store.
ProFlowers: What if instead of sending a bouquet of flowers to mark a special event, you sent a live plant instead? That’s the question this company answered when they jumped into the world of live plants. While their prices are generally higher than some of the other retailers on this list, each plant comes in a cute, colorful planter.
White Flower Farm: Based in Connecticut, this farm offers a wide range of houseplants, outdoor plants, and flowers. If you’re looking specifically for an orchid, this is the place to check out.
Woodies Garden Goods: This online retailer not only sells actual trees on their website (impressive), but is seems they always good sales. Score!
Craigslist: Okay, so this isn’t online shopping in its truest form, but, depending on where you live, their are usually a few decent plants on Craigslist. This is especially true around moving season (late summer), or if you’re looking for a large plant at a bargain price. Just make sure to check the plant for any bugs or fungus before purchasing!
There are so many plants on my wishlist right now, but specifically I want to get some marimo ‘moss’ balls. Which houseplant do you have your eye on? Let me know in the comments!
