How to Make an Outdoor Washing Machine

060410-washingmachine.jpg
Michael Perdriel fashioned a manual clothes washer that could be used by those in developing countries, but its low-tech design makes it indispensable for people in developed countries who dream of going green and off the grid. It requires no electricity or running water, and it cleans a load of clothes in 20 minutes. Interested in making one? Here's your materials list:

  • 10 gallon plastic bucket
  • 1 x 3 hardwood boards
  • 1/4" plywood
  • 1" hardwood dowels
  • wooden tool handle
  • 1/4" braided poly rope
  • 1/8" braided nylon parachute cord
  • flexible netting
  • PEX plastic tubing
  • 4" cable ties
  • 3/4" #6 stainless steel screws
  • 2" deck screws
  • waterproof glue
  • 1" diameter copper pipe slip connectors
  • aluminum bars
  • 5/16" x 3" screw eye
  • 1/4" bold with nuts and washers
  • nut to fit the 1/4 bolt
