Finding an outdoor rug that suits your style can be really hard sometimes. There are a lot of design choices, but some are just too busy and a bit overdone. So, when all else fails why not make your own modern outdoor rug! It’s so easy, you’ll want to make them all year round.
materials
- Flatwoven rug (like this one from IKEA)
- Fabric paint
- Angled bristle paint brush
- Painters tape
Step
Begin by taping a design on your rug. I wanted minimal and modern, so I opted for a simple diamond design.
Step
Once you are happy with how your design looks, dip your brush into the paint and carefully dab your paint onto the rug as if you were using a sponge. Because the rug is woven, making simple brush strokes won’t work well. A dabbing motion will get the paint into the fabric efficiently, while the bristles in the brush will work the paint deep into the material for more coverage.
Step
This step is optional, depending on the design you are going for. Remove tape in the center diamond and carefully paint the edges so that the natural material is fully covered and the black and white paint are back to back.
Step
Allow to dry for an hour, then remove tape.
Step
Allow the paint to continue to dry overnight to ensure the paint is completely dry throughout before use.
This rug is perfect for a little sitting area on the patio, but you can choose any size rug you desire. The minimal pattern is just enough to add that dose of color and texture without overwhelming the space!
