20 Edible Weeds

20 Edible Weeds

Instead of battling weeds this growing season, how about eating them? Care2 has a list of seven fairly common weeds we might have growing in our yards right now. They include:

  • Yellow Dock/Burdock
  • Lamb's Quarter
  • Dandelions
  • Nettles
  • Amaranth
  • Plantain (weed not banana)
  • Purslane

Old Fashioned Living chips in some suggestions too. Theirs include:

  • Cattails
  • Century plant
  • Chickweed
  • Chicory
  • Epazote
  • Garlic Mustard
  • Goldenrod
  • Horseweed
  • Kudzu
  • Milk thistle
  • Prickly lettuce
  • Sheep's sorrel
  • Shepherd's purse

OFL also has an edible weed salad recipe and a caffeine free coffee substitute using hickory and dandelion as well as a list of medicinal uses for weeds. Before you go out weeding your garden in preparation to cook tonight's supper, you must read their Safety Precautions. After that, you can start pickin'.

Location & pictures would be nice . Thank you for sharing. I think we waste so many natural foods. Time may come when someone will be starving & not know the plant they're standing on is eatable!
