Remember the Mod Podge + food coloring technique for painting clear glass? That was cool and all, but I spotted another method using Vitrail glass paint and acetone (nail polish remover) that allows the bottles and jars to be used as actual vases, as the finish is waterproof! This treatment provides for more depth of color as well.

Head on over to our updated post to get more details!

  1. This is for Jodie: You can use metallic silver spray paint – it works great. Just don’t spray to close, or you’ll get drips. Move around the glass or put on a turntable (lazy susan) – and it also helps if you get one of those gadgets that you put on the spray can – it looks like a handle & you don’t get paint on yourself. Your finger does not touch the spray nozzle.

  2. I was to do a tall stem vase.  Do I just brush on the paint onto the stem with a foam brush?

  3. I have painted the inside of my bottles with craft paint and I want to use it to put teabags, coffie, sugar in. How do I seal it sothat it is safe for food

  4. I used the Vitrail paint with acetone and my mason jars are beautiful….thank u….next time I’ll try the vitrea 160 paint and see how that goes but the vitrail worked great.  I think the only thing that I just love was they were a little darker then I wanted but I put lights in them and they are beautiful.

  5. Can you PLEASE (x100) tell me how you got your jars to become so streak-free? I have tried mineral spirits, nail polish remover, to absolute no avail. Is actual acetone better than nail polish remover because of its concentration? Is there some sort of secret ratio? Can you please let me know? Thanks so much in advance.

  6. What’s the best way to stain with multiple color’s? Is it possible? Thanks!!

  7. Great idea, love it 🙂 Just wondering if I can air dry the painted/tinted bottles as most videos i’ve seen are baked in oven? (I don’t mind waiting for long hours)

  8. I have so many clear vases and I thought of this technique however I am concerned that it will hard the flowers I put in.
