How To: Make a Simple DIY Leather Journal

These simple leather journals or sketchbooks would make great holiday gifts for the writers, doodlers, list-makers, or note-takers in your life.  I don't know about you but I want to make a hundred of these and give them to everyone I know!

This easy-to-follow tutorial comes from Katie Startzman of Duo Fiberworks (the same creative lady that brought us the rainbow-wrapped wreath idea).  To make your own 32-page book, all you need is the following:

  • Four pieces of paper, 8.5"x11"
  • Leather or suede scraps, one 5x7" and one 3x4"
  • Embroidery floss
  • Beeswax
  • Scissors
  • Xacto knife
  • Straight edge
  • Cutting mat
  • Large sturdy needle
  • Sewing machine

If you don't want to use leather, Katie suggests felt or any other sturdy, flexible material.  Once you've gathered up your supplies, head over to Duo Fiberworks for all the steps!

So glad you found this tutorial inspiring!  My kids enjoyed the journals so much last year, I'm going to make a set of them for each boy this year. Though I have to come clean, I don't have all the good ideas, I share my blog with my twin sister Laura and the rainbow wreath was her project.
