Newlywed Masterful Bedroom Makeover: The After

by on Apr 25, 2011

It’s here – the finish line! After an intense weekend and sharing our process step by step we are so excited to debut the finished product! From repainting to molding installation to new doors and bedding… you name it we updated it! After two days {and nights!} of work, and just a few (dozen!) trips to Lowes we have created a bedroom we truly love.

Here’s a tour of our finished bedroom!

For those {like me!} who aren’t into my nerdy videos, we also wanted to walk you through our updates. At the outset, we decided to use sustainable, organic and environmentally friendly materials as we worked to create a sanctuary from our hectic everyday lives.

You’ll remember the lime green walls we started with? They’re now now a soothing shade of gray, Benjamin Moore’s Cotswald. Better yet, they are completely non-toxic because we used the no-VOC Natura Benjamin Moore paint. We didn’t even have to open a window while we painted!

We also cut, painted, installed and touched up over 145 linear fit of trim. Adding what seemed to me like a small detail actually made a dramatic difference in the room feeling “finished.” Hanging art and bringing in details like a throw rug helped too! Chloe definitely approved. 🙂

Our focal in the room was and remains our four-poster king-sized bed. That wasn’t going anywhere. Therefore, we had to dress it up right! You’ll remember what it looked like before with its random quilt, exposed box spring and messy sheets.

Luckily, Dwell Studio came to our rescure. Their organic cotton bedding in the gorgeous Ikat pattern called Batavia was total perfection. I completed the bed “tszujing” with throw pillows from Dwell Studio and West Elm for a lush mix of pattern and texture. This immediately turned our lack luster bed into an inviting oasis.

With our first wedding anniversary around the corner, I decided to surprise Chris by finally framing images from the big day. But rather than plaster the walls with pictures of ourselves, I really wanted to look at the scenery ~ especially since we got married on a beautiful beach in Mexico. Doing that felt more personal and private ~ almost like an inside joke just for us.

I turned to PictureFrames.com, to print, mat and frame three of our favorite images taken by wedding photographer phenom Jose Villa. They now hang right above our bed. PictureFrames.com could not have done a more beautiful job creating high gloss images with the perfect off-white and sand mats. They’re a daily reminder of that very special moment in our lives!

To make sure all the hard work we did was properly lit, we drenched the room in energy-efficient light from Sylvania’s ULTRA LED collection, both in our ceiling lights and in two adjustable pharmacy lamps courtsey of Lamps Plus. For a double whammy, we replaced standard closet doors with mirrored doors from Reliabilt, sourced from Lowes.

As a result, the room seemed to double in size!

Final DIY touches like my custom jewelry frame and quick solutions like switching out our beside table hardware for Anthropologie knobs, continued to personalize the space even more.

All in all, we couldn’t be more thrilled with our results. But, this is also just the beginning. Designing a room and, more importantly, turning a house into a home is always a work in progress. I’m constantly on the lookout for that one special piece, that added layer of dimension {right now it’s the hunt for the perfect sheepskin or faux-fur rug for in front of my closet!} but we now have an amazing foundation to build on and know we can do it!

Thanks again to everyone who helped us make this makeover dream come to true and for Curbly.com for having me. I certainly enjoyed it!
