Curbly Ornaments Challenge: DIY Painted Veneer Ornaments

by on Dec 9, 2014

Last time I was at my local wood working store, I picked up some long pieces of maple veneer, thinking I’d use it somehow during the holidays. At the time I had no idea how I’d use it, but once the Curbly Ornament Challenge rolled around, I realized this material would be perfect for making easy holiday ornaments. Here’s what I ended up with.

The finished ornaments are colorful and funky, but are also super easy to make. And would be perfect for making in large quantities as small gift sets or gift toppers.

Supplies:

  • maple veneer (I used ambrosia maple)
  • pencil
  • paint brush
  • hole punch
  • Xacto knife
  • string
  • acrylic paint

How-To:

1. Draw out various shapes that you want to use for the ornaments. You can freehand the shapes or trace something you already have.

2. Then, cut out the pieces, using an Xacto knife (or scissors if you prefer – just be careful the veneer can be a little brittle).

3. Next, punch a hole through each shape, toward the top, with a hole punch.

4. Then paint them with acrylic paint, in various designs and patterns.

5. Add a colorful string and tie in a knot, and you’re ready to hang your new new ornaments on the tree. Pretty easy, right?
