Banners are a fun way to add some festive style to a room, but they aren’t used quite as much during the Christmas holiday season…. until now! Today I’m sharing how to create a fun message banner which you can customize with any text you like. Click through to check it out.

I chose the phrase “holly jolly” for my banner, and I went with a non-traditional dark magenta color… but you can customize it any way you like!

Materials

  • Adhesive letters, about 3 inches tall
  • 1/2 yard of burlap fabric
  • Scissors
  • Triangle template cut out of cardboard or foam core board
  • Paperclip
  • 12 inches of gold ribbon
  • Spray paint
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pen
  • 2 square dowel rods, 3 feet long each

Begin by cutting out a triangle template from a piece of cardboard or foam core board. Mine was about 6 inches wide. Choose a word or short phrase to put on your banner and count up the letters. If your phrase is longer, you’ll either need to make a smaller triangle template or use an additional dowel rod. Use your template and pen to create a series of triangles on your burlap fabric – the same number as your phrase, so you have one flag per letter.

Cut them out and place the letters from your phrase onto the triangles, leaving a bit of extra space above the letter to glue the dowel on later.

Bring the flags outside and spray paint them your desired color. I did one coat, but you could do two if you want a super saturated color. While you’re at it, spray paint your dowel rods a different color (I chose gold).

Once your dowel rods are dry, flip them over and glue a paper clip to the spot where they connect to keep them securely attached.

Next, lay out your letter flags along with your dowels to make sure they will fit correctly. Attach them by putting a line of glue along the top edge of the flag and then placing it underneath the dowel rod.

There are lots of ways you could mount your banner on the wall – you could use small nails every couple of feet, or 3M Command Strips would work as well. I glued a piece of gold ribbon to each end and simply taped the ribbons to my mantel. I did have to use a bit of tape behind a couple of flags so it didn’t droop… but the whole thing is so light that it worked nicely.

The banner adds a fun pop of color to our kitchen, and feels festive in a not-so-traditional kind of way thanks to my funky color choice.

This would look great with a multi-color scheme as well… I think my next one will be different shades of green.

You could even try different fabric… it might look interesting with a patterned fabric or a darker one with light colored paint. The sky’s the limit! Speaking of limits, check out our 99 Ways You Can Use Fabric To Decorate Every Room of Your Home!
