‘An architect’s home is the ultimate self portrait.’ Sounds about right, right? I mean, if you were a renowned architect and you had the cash, which I’m guessing you would if you were a renowned architect, and no creative restraint, your residence would be the quintessential outward manifestation of that which is You. That being said, these images of the personal residences of some very heavy-hitters can be seen as autobiographies of sorts.
Above is Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio, located outside Chicago, while below we see his winter home in Scottsdale, AZ, Taliesin West.
The personal residence of Charles and Ray Eames, Case Study No. 8, was a collaboration with Eero Saarinen.
Frank Gehry’s home, located in Santa Monica, CA, is considered an early work that hints of things to come.
The name Alden B. Dow might not be as famed as the previous architects, but his House and Studio is just as extraordinary as theirs. Of the Prairie Style similar to his associate Frank Lloyd Wright, the home is build into a pond, its water level inches above the structure’s windows.
