Convert Old TV Cabinets Into State of the Art Play Kitchens

By: Modhomeecteacher Jan 10, 2011

You've seen these clunky monsters at Goodwill, garage sales, or possibly in your own basement.  I've got to say, I never saw this coming. These sturdy, state of the art play kitchens are some of the best examples of furniture re-use I've ever seen.  See what I mean...This first one was lovingly converted into a cute little red and white kitchen by Milla's grandma and grandpa. (Can you imagine how much fun they had?)

Would you look at those little shelves on the fridge door?

Amy, mom of Milla and author of Giggleberry Creations blog,  got the inspiration for the cabinet conversion from  North Carolina blog, Sutton Grace. She gave up on the idea of doing this herself. Mum and Pop came through.

Erin, of Sutton Grace, started off with almost the same discarded cabinet.

And this is the modern little kitchen she created:

Kids can keep their own cold drinks & snacks in a dorm-size refrigerator (not refig/freezer) that can be built into the setup. These units keep things cool, but will not freeze, and run on solid-state electronics (no compressor, coolant, etc.) with a fan to circulate the air around the contents. A 12V car cooler uses the same technology and can be substituted or cannibalized for the same purpose, but you will need a battery or voltage converter.

These could be Little Artists' Studio, Mini Scientific Labs, My Own Workbench, etc. What a WONDERFUL idea; I can't wait to get started. Thanks!

what did you use for the fridge door? I'm doing one of these right now that didn't have a "tall" door  on it so I'm trying to find something that is lightweight yet sturdy for the door (I have  1, 2, 6 year old daughters)

Absolutely brilliant idea - love it.  And such great make-overs as well, the quality of the repainting and fitout makes the resulting product a real stunner.

Very impressed!

Oh a little work bench would be great Elsea Jane! Make sure to take pictures if you do it.

I've got all boy grands but I think they might like this too, or I could alter the spects just a little and make a little workshop. I'ld love to do this for my church, I'll keep you informed.

I've been waiting to have a granddaughter to make our daughter's chiffarobe into a kitchen for her. I love repurposing all different kinds of furniture, but this is probably my all time favorite idea. Just too darn cute and there are so many of old entertainment centers on Craigslist to play with.

Wow! These are amazing. These folks are so creative and talented. I LOVE this idea, although I'd be intimidated to try it.

Still, I'm going to include this in my Sunday roundup. Phenomenol!

So awesome, I want to be a little girl again, or have my daughter be little so I can make one for her!
