Make This: Affordable Bohemian-Inspired Fabric Wall Art

by on Aug 19, 2015

I’m a huge fan of a great piece of wall art. It’s the one part of my home that’s always evolving! Like, pillows It’s such a simple and affordable way to change out a look in any space, refreshing the entire room.

Lately, my living room is changing…again! I tend to grow out of trends and certain looks every few years, so I like the challenge of finding simple ways to update the space. This time, I’ve really wanted to try and achieve a warm, boho-chic look. And this wall hanging is a fantastic way to bring a unique and mesmerizing piece into your home! Oh…and it costs like $10!

Instructions:

1. Begin by figuring out what size you’d like your wall hanging to be. I wanted mine quite large, so I cut my fabric accordingly. But you can choose whatever makes sense for your space. Cut it to size, adding a 1″ seam allowance on the sides, and add 3″ to the top. Give your fabric a quick iron so that it’s not too wrinkly.

2. Fold and iron about an inch of all four sides of your wall hanging. This will be your hem line so your fabric doesn’t unravel in the future! Be sure to leave an extra inch or two at the top for your dowel insert.

3. Sew along your folded lines.

4. You may want to iron one more time to ensure your fabric is wrinkle free before your artwork. I decided to create three circles in the center of my wall hanging. I simply used three different sized circular objects to trace using a pencil as my guide.

5. I then used a series of repeated patterns inside the circles to create the overall look of my wall hanging. You have complete creative freedom – you can do almost anything! (Optional: Hot glue tassels onto the bottom to add a little color and texture. I picked mine up from Michael’s!)

6. Cut dowel to size (or you can find dowels pre-cut at Michael’s). Insert through the top opening. Tie your string onto either end to hang and enjoy!

Funny enough, the patterns I chose for this wall hanging were Scandinavian-inspired. When they are all clumped together in a repetitive pattern, it looks very eclectic and global. I decided on a black and white pattern, but added the pops of color to help stand out just a little bit more! I’m also a little obsessed with hands at the moment and decided to trace mine for the top and bottom circles to add something a little quirky. The space definitely has a very boho feel to it and I am so happy with how this project turned out!
