Top 10 Ways to Repel Mosquitoes (Low Tech Style)

By: Diy maven Jun 27, 2007

10. Eliminate standing water. Objects that can collect water provide for perfect breeding areas for mosquitoes. This includes plastic wrappers, tarps, tires, planter saucers, kids' toys and clogged gutters. Also, if you’re a fan of birdbaths, change the water in them at least twice a week, and, of course, change the water in outdoor pet bowls regularly. For items such as recyling bins, drill drainage holes to prevent standing water.

9. Grow the right plants. Plants such as horsemint, rosemary, marigolds, ageratum, agastache cana, and catnip are said to have odorous attributes that mosquitoes detest. Simply crush the leaves to release their scent, or rub them on your skin and clothing for the most protection.

8. Burn a bit of the herb. (Not that herb.) The next time you barbeque, throw some sage or rosemary on the coals to repel mosquitoes.

7. Save your parsley. You can make your own mosquito repellant by putting crushed parsley in a jar of apple cider vinegar. Rub the concoction on your skin or dip a handkerchief in it, which you can tie around your neck or hat band.

6. Attract bats. It is said that one small brown bat can catch 600 mosquitoes per hour. In an effort to attract these opportunistic insect eaters, you might want to consider building or buying a bat house. And if you’re worried about contracting rabies from the bats you attract, consider the Niagara Frontier Wildlife Habitat Council’s statistic that the less than half of one percent of all bats that contract rabies, which all mammals can do, ‘they normally bite only in self-defense and pose little threat to people who do not handle them.’ For a free bat house pattern, go to Bat Conservation International.

5. Weed wack. Adult mosquitoes love to chill in extraneous vegetation. If you get rid of it, you’ll get rid of them.

4. Keep it light. When considering your attire for outdoor activities, think white and light as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors.

3. Keep it breezy. Mosquitoes don’t like strong wind currents; sitting next to a fan will keep the little pests away.

2. Go fluorescent. Mosquitoes are attracted to incandescent lights. For outdoor lighting, considering installing fluorescent lights, which don’t attract or repel mosquitoes.

And the #1 way to repel mosquitoes the low tech way....

Eat more garlic. When you eat garlic, especially large quantities of it, an invisible layer of garlic oil seeps from your pores and creates a mosquito barrier. If you don’t like the thought of eating more garlic, you can also use garlic juice to make a natural repellant. According to hometownannapolis.com, ‘Mix one part garlic juice with 5 parts water in a small spray bottle. Shake well before using. Spray lightly on exposed body parts for an effective repellent lasting up to 5 to 6 hours.’ And if you don’t like the idea of reeking of garlic, you can dip strips of cotton cloth into the malodorous mixture which you can then hang in strategic areas such as patios, decks and such as a local deterrent.

Is washing and keeping clean a good way to detract them I.e having a shower before bed?.

In certain areas, you want to avoid attracting bats, or the 'cure' could be worse than the disease - here in southern California, for instance, bats are the primary vectors for rabies.

I am getting bit sitting on my couch right now, they are so small I can not see or feel them land on me.  I will try the listerine.

I use Gain fabric softner in a spray bottle with about a cap full of listerine works great
In a group of people, the mosquitoes are attracted to the one with the largest lung capacity. They have the most CO2 expelled with each breath.
Mosquitos are attracted to the CO2 you exhale. Adding various scents to the area can help confuse them. The larger the group of people, the more attracted mosquitos will be. Clothing colors don't matter.

I can't believe how many people online that can be easily listed under the redneck category. anyhow, perhaps some scents will help repelling the awful little buggers, but keep in mind that mosquitos don't use their sight to find their victims, they rely solely on following the chemical scent .

i need help i have rabbits and the mosquitoes can kill them i put mosi net on their cages but two cages r too big any ideas what about burning cow poo

Smoke cannabis. I do and can 110% confirm i have never been bitten. Cannabis and Hemp Oil or Hemp infused products work. They hate it. I had one spy me up and hover in front of me. I actually rushed towards it with my arms out. It landed on me, sniffed me and f**cked off. They do not like sour blood and cannabis makes your blood sour. I have even walked through jungle areas bare foot to try and encourage them to bite me. Trust me, have a joint and they wont touch you.

There are a couple facts on this page about bats that are incorrect! Bats are necessary ecosystem balancers, but the percentage of wild bats with rabies is actually unknown (though it is thought to be around 1%). No studies have tested prevalence of rabies in wild populations. It is indicated that a rabid bat's behavior is different from a nonrabid bat since the number of tested bats with rabies is higher (bats are usually only tested when there has been a potential exposure to a human) than what we think the proportion is in the wild. This indicates they are more likely to do goofy things (like interact with humans) while rabid. Bats are "reservoirs" for rabies. This means their species carries rabies and is pretty good at infecting other "incidental hosts." The last many cases of human rabies in the U.S. have been due to a bat bite, not raccoons, skunks or dogs.  Just wanted to clarify--bats are good, but if there is any kind of human interaction with them, please either test the bat or receive post-exposure vaccinations.

vinegar is useful too

Loving garlic & having them in your system is two different thing. Yea, I notice when I eaten some good quantity of garlic, it reduce the likelihood of me being mosquito target. Typical Chinese food have lots of them and I like to use them in my cooking as well.

Is it true that certain colors such as blue, purple and yellow repel insects and mosquitoes? If thus is the case, please explain how this works?
