How to Make Folded Paper (Kirigami) Christmas Trees

by on Dec 9, 2010

A few weeks ago my mother-in-law, Lin, showed me how to make these really cool Kirigami (which, unlike Origami, includes cutting) paper trees. They’re super easy, once you get the hang of them, and look really nice in bunches. Plus, you can get creative with the paper you use (Lin’s incredible hand-marbled paper is a good place to start) for different effects.

There are lots of tutorials on the web about how to make these, but they all seemed inadequate or poorly photographed, so I went ahead and did a details photo walk-through.

And here are some more shots of my finished trees:

Use a simple, shiny paper for a nice effect.

Once you get quick at this, you'll have a forest in no time.

Patterns add a nice touch.

There's that awesome marbled paper.

Made this one out of an old contact strip I had lying around.
