How To: Make a Modern Christmas Wall Hanging

by on Nov 10, 2014

If I had to pinpoint one aspect of the holidays I loved, it would be the decorating. The lights, colorful bulbs, the smells, and everything else in between! Not that I think my partner would agree, but I would put a tree in every room of my house if I could. So instead of being the tree lot’s favorite customer, I decided to make this modern tree hanging to go up in my office.

What you’ll need:

Cut the fabric to the size of your choice. Do know that you will be making cuts later, so your lines don’t have to be exact. Just make sure you leave enough space to trim.

Tape off your design. You can use chalk to lightly draw your design onto the fabric if you need guidelines. I found it easiest to play around with the tape until getting the tree I wanted.

Press the tape firmly to secure. The stronger the hold is, the crisper your lines will be.

Clorox® Regular-Bleach packs the whitening and dirt-fighting power you demand. Plus it disinfects to kill 99.9% of germs and bacteria, which is kinda awesome.

Since my fabric was a darker hue, it took the bleach about 10-15 minutes to process. If you should use a lighter fabric, like grey, it may only take about 5-10. Just keep an eye on it throughout the development to make sure you’re getting the desired results.

Once done processing, rinse in cold water, dry, and iron. To hang, you’ll want to trim the sides for clean lines. You can hem them with a sewing machine, or cut with scissors – just leave an extra inch or two at the top for hanging.

When it’s the final shape you want, you’ll fold the extra fabric at the top over and secure with a few stitches. Slide in your dowel rod, and suspend with cord (mine is leather).

Hang on a nail and enjoy!
