Our Baby Boy’s Nursery Makeover Inspiration

by on Mar 2, 2015

When we moved into our first home about a year and a half ago, I had every intention of making our guest bedroom into a place for, well, guests. I tried to muster up the energy and enthusiasm to make this empty space into a place for people to come and visit us, but alas, no inspiration came and the room remained empty.

And by empty, really what I mean is a place for all of Al’s things to go and die. Items that didn’t make the cut of “living room appropriate” sat in that little room, collecting dust and despair, with no hope or future of ever making it out alive. As you can see here, the results weren’t pretty, and needless to say, the door stayed closed 90% of the time.

Since we live in a small 1940’s cottage in the heart of the city, closet space is at a premium, and thus, Al had been using the closet in the spare bedroom for all of his clothes. As you can see from the photo, it was packed in there, and often exploding into the surrounding areas.

But surprisingly, I didn’t mind because of my aforementioned ability to simply close off this room to my mind’s eye. Problem solved. It was as if the room didn’t exist to me. I would often tell people, “I don’t even know why we bought a two bedroom house because we don’t even look at the second bedroom, let alone use it.” Short term planning on my end, as the room need was about to hit high demand.

If I’m being completely honest with myself though, the real reason I never decorated the room was because deep down, I knew this would be the room of our first baby, and there was no need to disguise it as anything else. So when we found out we were pregnant back in July, I was thrilled to get started on what would quickly become my favorite room in the house and project to date.

My first spark of inspiration for the nursery actually hit long before I was pregnant with this wallpaper from Rifle Paper Company. I even thought about buying a few rolls early, just to ensure it would be there when the time was right. Luckily, my husband talked me down from this crazy cliff and thankfully, the paper was still there when I actually had need for it. I fell in love with this print and wanted to use it for just a single accent wall that embodied both a childlike theme and a sophisticated look. So this was where it all began. Knowing that I was itching to get started on design, but not knowing the gender of our baby yet, Al lovingly made a few mockups for me of two potential looks for our new baby room.

Items to be included in a baby boy's nursery.

You can imagine how thrilled I was to hear that Land of Nod wanted to partner with us on our nursery makeover! I had no trouble at all getting lost in their pages upon pages of beautiful baby furniture for the thoroughly modern babe. We naturally gravitated toward the grays and whites because, let’s be honest, those are the colors of every room in our house, but were thrilled with the pops of color here to add for a little life and personality to our usual monotone style. We found a number of great furniture pieces that would work in both a boy’s room or a girl’s and waited for our 20 week ultrasound to make the final decision on the last design touches. As with most of our projects, I created a pinterest board to help capture all my ideas, big and small.
