How to: Paint a Buffalo Check Table

by Jeran McConnel
Buffalo plaid table painting DIY

I love black and white, and what better pattern to show off this high contrast combo then buffalo check (also known as buffalo plaid). For the last few years, I've been adding more and more of this (usually) red-and-black flannel pattern known to my fall/winter wardrobe and home decor.  Last year, I decorated a whole Christmas tree for $10, and buffalo check was the main star.

So, when I found this solid little table at a thrift store for $8, I decided to give it a giant gingham makeover.

I can't get enough of graphic grid patterns.  It's a clean, less busy version of plaid. Add a grid pattern to a space, and it instantly seems modern and current. I few months ago I hand drew an entire wall in a grid pattern. Ever since, I've been on the hunt for all for more grid patterns to add to my home. These bold pillows in a classic black and white grid are sure to stand out in any space.

Before and After: How to Transform a Rusty Metal Cabinet to a Modern Statement Piece

Okay, confession time.  I have a lot of random junk in my garage.  I love to thrift, so when I come across furniture that has "potential", I buy it and save it for a rainy day.  This ugly little metal drawer cabinet has been in my garage for a couple years now collecting dust.  I bought it at the Pasadena Flea Market and paid about $20 for it.  It was very rusty and had a lot of holes and chipped layers of paint.

Make It! DIY Modern Pet Bed

by Jeran McConnel

Everyone in your family deserves a stylish little place of their own.  We love our cat, Pumpkin, but he isn't allowed on the sofa.  I'm just not a fan of pet hair on everything.  I wanted to give him his own special spot, without sacrificing style in our home.  This easy-to-make pet bed cost only $10 in materials.  Instead of buying expensive designer fabric, I created my own look with modern black and white splatter effect.  I'll happily let it live in our living room and with its removable cover, I can easily wash it often to keep the air issues at bay.

How to: Modern and Colorful Geometric Mobile

by Jeran McConnel

I recently became an aunt again. I've made baby quilts and mobiles for all three of my brother's kids. The first one was a drift wood and sea shell one and then I made a birch bark and birdy one, but for this third baby I made a brightly colored quilt in triangles, so I wanted to continue that theme with the mobile.

How to: Modern and Colorful Geometric Mobile

A few supplies from the craft store, a drill and some craft paint, and I had a mobile made in about an hour.

How to: DIY Typographic Concrete Garden Art

by Jeran McConnel

I am having so much fun playing with cement. It's such an inexpensive material and there are so many possibilities for projects. I also love the durable, rough nature of cement. Something about it's raw look and feel adds a cool, relaxed feeling to your decor. It's definitely not a pretentious material.

I love having a little splash of decor outside my home to give folks an idea of what might be going on inside. These fun BOO garden stakes add just a hint of fright to my yard for Halloween. I'm not big of the gory and super scary this time of year, so these playful letters are just right for me.

I love adding large-scale statement pieces to my home, especially when it comes to art.  It instantly upgrades the space and pulls together a room effortlessly. So, when I spotted this gorgeous rug at Anthropologie, I decided I'd recreate the pattern in the form of a budget-friendly, large-scale art print. All you'll need is a large frame and a few sheets of colored card stock.
