Make It: DIY Marble Side Table

by on May 31, 2016

Marble is classic, timeless and seems to be everywhere in the interior design world. It is also expensive. Here is a super simple tutorial to get a little marble into your decor by making a marble topped side table out of a marble cutting board and luggage rack.

This project will only take you about 30 minutes it is easy, and yes… the marble is real. Here is what you need…

Materials

  • Marble Cutting Board (I found mine at an estate sale for $5.) You could buy one here.
  • Sturdy folding luggage rack (If you have a real marble slab it needs to be sturdy. I bought mine at a thrift store). You want your luggage rack to be smaller than your slab, but not too small or it will not be sturdy. Here is one to buy.
  • Loctite or Liquid Nails construction adhesive.
  • Clamps (2-4)
  • Felt furniture protector or folded cloth to protect slab while clamping.

Places to find inexpensive small Marble Slabs:  Marble cutting boards are a common find at estate sales. Architectural Salvage stores often have inexpensive small remnant slabs of marble that you can take to a countertop manufacturer to sand and shape. Finally, try your local natural countertop manufacturer. They might have a sink cut out from a marble countertop install. If they do they can sand down and shape it for you.

If you search and cannot find a real marble slab you always could cover a piece of wood with marble contact paper.

Use the Loctite or Liquid Nails on the part of the luggage rack where the marble top will rest. You can put it on the fabric part of the luggage rack but I didn’t need to with mine. Loctite or Liquid Nails doesn’t mess around. That stuff will hold well.

Place your marble top on top of your luggage rack with the adhesive. I used two clamps to hold it in place. My marble countertop was heavy so this step was probably not needed. I took a small felt furniture protector and put it under the clamp to protect the countertop. You could also use a folded piece of fabric. Make sure you wipe the excess adhesive immediately.

Take your clamps off after the adhesive’s recommended dry time and you are done. Yes, it was that easy. No tools, no cutting, and no crazy project dust.
