DIY Concrete Fire Column For Your Backyard

Spring is (finally) right around the corner, which means that you’re probably starting to think about your outdoor space. I know I am. So today I’m sharing a fun project that will give your porch some serious style. Read on to check it out.

This concrete and stone fire column is both attractive and functional, with a painted concrete base and a tiki torch hidden inside. Let’s get started!

Here’s what you’ll need for your fire column:

Quickrete
Tiki torch
Glass vase, 6 inch diameter and at least 16 inches tall
Aluminum flashing
Plastic wrap
3 cups of stones
Painters tape
Tin snips
Acrylic craft paint
Paintbrush
E6000 glue (not pictured)

Begin by flipping your vase upside down and covering it with plastic wrap.

Next, cut an 8×20 piece of aluminum flashing. Wrap it around the top of the vase and tape it thoroughly with painters tape.

Now it’s time to mix your concrete. Raid your recycling bin for a container to mix in and follow the instructions on the Quikrete container. I used 5 1/2 cups of Quikrete with 1 cup of water. Mix it up thoroughly.

Dump the mixture into the tube created within the aluminum flashing on top of the vase. Pack it down so it is as level and flat as possible. Set it aside to dry overnight. Contrary to the directions on the Quikrete label, you will need to let it dry for at least 8 or 10 hours depending on the humidity of your home.

Remove the flashing and pull the cement cylinder off of the base of the vase. Paint a design on the concrete piece using your acrylic paint. I decided to go geometric, with two green triangles.

Squeeze a large portion of E6000 glue onto the bottom of the vase and let it dry for a minute or two until it is tacky.

Place the concrete base onto the glued surface and let it dry for a couple of hours.

Last, flip your fire column right side up and place the tiki torch in the vase. (Make sure the torch has fuel inside). Surround it with stones until just the wick is sticking out of the top. And you’re finished!
