Every time I walk into Anthropologie, I walk out with a handful of items… and wishing I could have bought so much more. But when I ran across the Tahiti Basket, it occurred to me that it might be one piece that I could recreate at home. And so the fringe basket Anthro Knockoff was born!

Step

Begin by wrapping a piece of yarn all the way around the top of your basket. Add 2 inches onto each end and then cut to form the top of your fringe.

Step

Next, begin wrapping the same yarn color around and around the piece of cardboard.

Step

Cut the yarn at one edge of the cardboard. The yarn pieces should be 10 inches long.

Step

Tape each end of the long piece of yarn you cut in step 1 to your work surface. Take 5 pieces of yarn and fold them in half. Slip the folded side underneath the long taped piece of yarn, and then bring the tails through the looped side forming a tassel. Pull tight. Repeat again and again until you’ve filled the whole piece of taped yarn. Trim the bottom of the fringe so that it’s even.

Then repeat steps 1 through 4 with the other two yarn colors.

Step

Wrap one of the fringe pieces around the basket and tie a double knot. Hold the other two up over this one to make sure it is at the right height.

Step

Use your hot glue gun to attach the fringe to the basket every couple of inches. Repeat this gluing process with the other two fringe colors, and you’re done!

The finished product is unique and eye-catching, and makes the perfect blanket basket or spot for books and magazines.

The tassel fringe gives it a bit of that bohemian charm that’s so popular these days, and adds some color to an otherwise neutral piece. I love the texture and softness too!

You might consider experimenting with colors or materials… I used yarn because I have a ton of it lying around, but embroidery floss or other types of string might look interesting as well. Have fun with it!
