1. Swap out summer accents. Trade your lighter throw pillows for darker ones with lots of texture – think plaid, tweed and faux fur. If you already have tons of pillows laying around, you might consider removing the cover from an existing one and making your own like I did above… simply draw your text onto a piece of plaid flannel and embroider with coordinating embroidery floss. Other items you may want to consider swapping out: blankets, baskets, vases and accent rugs.

2. Add cozy lighting. With the cooler weather comes less daylight, so be sure to compensate with lots of warm lighting throughout your home. This may come in the form of candles, table lamps or even accent lighting inside of built-ins or under kitchen cabinets. Don’t forget about the yard too… bistro lights, fire pits and candles will lend a warm vibe to your patio, and allow you to enjoy that beautiful fall weather later into the evening.

3. Bring fall colors inside. Take a cue from nature and use those autumnal colors inside your home. Incorporating red, orange, yellow and gold inside of your home will give your space an inviting feel as you usher in the the new season. In addition to simply decorating with warmer colors, you may want to literally bring nature indoors – place a few pumpkins or gourds around the house, and put a vase of fall flowers on the table. Pinecones, wheat and dried flowers also make great fall decorations.
