If you’re on the hunt for a fun, contemporary ornament for your tree, then you’ve come to the right place. Today we’re showing you how to make a unique geometric ornament out of card stock and bakers twine (which means it won’t break when the dog inevitably runs into the tree). And best of all, we’ve included a free printable file (with two color schemes), so this project will take all of 15 minutes to make. Read on to check it out!

The blue and green version has a cooler vibe that almost looks like an abstract landscape, while the red and purple version is warmer and slightly more traditional.

Now, let’s get started!

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

– Free printable file

– Hot glue gun

– Scissors

– Bakers twine

Begin by printing out your file on cardstock. I used thick paper with a glossy finish to give it a shiny look, but you could also use matte paper. You can create different sized ornaments by reducing the scale percentage when you print it out.

Cut along the solid green line that surrounds the ornament. Keep the excess paper so you can refer back to the fold lines.

Fold along the dotted lines to create the tabs that you will later glue. Refer to the excess paper to show you where to fold the triangular sections.

Cut an eight inch piece of bakers twine and fold it in half. Tie a double knot at the unfolded end.

Use your hot glue gun to attach the spots that say “glue,” starting with the square base. The tabs should be hidden on the inside of the ornament. Before you do the side piece, slip the bakers twine in the top with the knot on the inside (it will keep the twine from slipping out).

Hold everything flat on your work surface for a few seconds while the glue dries.

I told you it was quick and easy! Now make a few more in a few different sizes and go hang them on your Christmas tree.

Alternatively, these would look great clustered on a mantel (just skip the bakers twine) or hang them from an evergreen garland. The modern color scheme and slightly Scandinavian feel makes them very versatile.

These ornaments work well for households with kids or pets who might be interested in the tree – they won’t shatter on the floor like traditional ornaments.

Happy holidays everyone!
