How to: Clean Under Your Kitchen Sink in 10 Minutes

by on Mar 12, 2013

The dark abyss below my kitchen sink is usually the last thing on my mind. But now that spring is just around the corner, I wanted to give the space a quick makeover. Read on for my step-by-step guide to cleaning this often forgotten space in under 10 minutes.

1. The first step is to remove everything. Lay it all out in plain view on a piece of newspaper.

2. Discard any containers that are empty, and consolidate cleaning products that are less that 25% full (make sure to only combine like products… don’t add the Clorox spray to the 409).

3. Wash any rags or towels that may be lying around accumulating mildew. Disinfect sponges by moistening them and microwaving on high for one minute.

4. Use one of those disinfecting sprays you have out to clean the bottom of the cupboard. Dry it off and then spread shelf liner across the surface. If you keep your trash can underneath the sink, it wouldn’t hurt to disinfect the outside of this as well.

5. Next, insert hooks (or nails, in a pinch) on the inside of the cabinet door. Hang things like rubber gloves, rags and brushes here. Check out the full technique over at Martha Stewart.

6. Place a tension rod across the top of the cabinet, and put all of your spray bottles here. This utilizes vertical space, and will also allow for easy access when you spill red wine on your white carpet. (Not that this has ever happened to me. No, never.) Find out more about this and other clever ideas over on A Thousand Words.

7. A Lazy Susan, as shown in the first photo, is a fantastic way to hold all of the remaining products; if you don’t have the time to go out and get one, a shoebox will suffice. The important thing is to be able to reach products in the back without having to remove every single one that’s in front of it. See details on this storage idea and others over on Real Simple.

And that’s it! Now you don’t have to be embarrassed to open the cabinet doors under your sink anymore.

  1. I need to clean up under my kitchen sink because there is already mold growing there and it looks really horrible when I open the closet. As you say, half of the bottles are empty and there are dirty rugs lying there. I will surely clean up! Thank you for the tips!
