How to Sew a Couch

Sew a couch?! Yup. A cushion couch that is. A fraction of the cost of your average ‘real’ couch but much more interesting. Not only can you make it one-of-a-kind, you can rearrange the cushions to create different looks. To make one like in the picture, you’ll need the following, times 2.

For one 4″ thick cushion:

  • 22″ X 22″X 4″ foam cushion
  • 1-1/3 yd 45″ home dec fabric
  • 2/3 yd contrasting print for side bands
  • 1/2 Yd contrasting solid for cording
  • 5 1/3 Yd 3/4″ cording

For one 8″ thick cushion:

  • Two 22″ X 22″ X 4″ foam cushion
  • 1-1/3 yd 45″ home dec fabric
  • 1-1/8 yd contrasting print for side bands
  • 1/2 yd contrasting solid for cording
  • 5 1/3 Yd 3/4″ cording

For both sizes:

  • 8 Buttons
  • Heavy duty thread
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Directions (1/2″ seam allowances)

I’d probably opt to wrap the cushions in batting to ease the foam’s hard edge. Sewing.org has the rest of the how-to covered.
