Embossing velvet is one of those things that looks difficult, but it really couldn’t be easier. Why might you want to attempt such a thing? Well, it’s a great way to add some flair to a luxurious yet somewhat stodgy textile.
What you need:
- velvet
- an iron
- a rubber stamp with a design you’d like to emboss upon the velvet
What you do:
Heat the iron to the appropriate temperature. My velvet was a polyester blend, so I set my temp to ‘polyester’.
Lay the rubber stamp, stamp side up, on your ironing surface. Lay the velvet fuzzy side down over the rubber stamp.
Sprits the back of the fabric where the rubber stamp lightly with water and set the iron on the spot for a 5 to 10 seconds OR skip the sprits and use a burst of steam on your iron for the 5 to 10 seconds. Either of these methods will work; I suggest you test each on a scrap of velvet to see which you prefer.
Remove your velvet and ta da!
One image looks cool, but so does a bunch of overlapping ones.
Embossed velvet is great for embellishing a myriad of crafty things. It could also make for some very cool cushion covers and such.
