Chris Heider, the handy dad behind the very popular YouTube video showing how he made a platform bed with storage using IKEA kitchen cabinets is at it again. This time he shows us how to use Billy and Brimnes Bookcases, which cost $49.99 and $119.00 respectively, to make a very cool “bed bridge” bookcase.

The inspiration was a $1700 ensemble spotted in a catalog. Chris’s version clocked in at about $390. The still shots you see here were snagged from his video explaining the process. You can watch that below and read more about the project at Chris’s website Handy Dad TV.

  1. Totally loved your Ikea bridge book case. I’ve been looking for something exactly like this! Thanks for the inspiration!

  2. It’s in the right direction I’m wanting to see or get a layout of…I’m going by the 1st picture the pink one….I would like for mine to cover the whole wall and on the bookshelf at the bottom I would like to have nice nightstands made from the bottom shelf with draws instead of a shelf…and done all in black…do you have some ideal that you could email me….I have a low profile bed all black wood and it’s full size…could you send me some hints on the draws on the bottom of the wall unit one on each side….I love your creativity and nice work …Thank you for sharing with everyone. Have a Blessed Day

  3. It’s made from three IKEA bookcases, plus some added trim.

The center is a narrow Billy bookcase, turned on its side. IKEA lists it as 79.5 inches, but here it appears to have the base cut off to make it symmetrical. Since a King mattress is 76 inches wide, and the bed frame usually adds a couple inches, it probably won’t fit. However, a California King mattress is 72 inches wide so it might fit. A Queen mattress is only 60 inches wide so it would fit fine.

The left and right pieces are each a Brimnes bookcase, which as of 2023 is priced at $149.
