by on Nov 8, 2012

This month, Curbly is excited to team up with designer and TV host David Bromstad, of HGTV’s Design Star and The White Room Challenge. David is offering his professional tips about one his biggest passions: using color to transform everyday rooms into something extraordinary.

There are beautiful furnitures in the living room.

You know I looove me some bright colors! But incorporating them into your home can be tricky.  But it’s not impossible!  My number one recommendation is always to keep the majority of your elements in the room a neutral color, like white, cream, grey, and beige (walls, floors, big furniture pieces) and add your pops of color with artwork, accent chairs, pillows and accessories, and if your really brave you can bring in a color statement piece like a couch.  This will create a sophisticated and livable look that you will love for years to come.

There are no real rules for using bright colors expect that you want to make sure that your colors are have the same saturation point.  This is why jewel tones work so beautifully together.   A little trick is to lay out your colors on a mood board before you start purchasing and see what looks best together.

A fully decorated room with white and green curtains and wooden tables and maroon and yellow chairs.
If you do want to GO FOR IT with color on your walls then make sure that your furnishing are mostly neutral to balance out the dramatic color on the walls.   Splash in a few pops of color on chairs, rugs and accessories to bring it all together.
