Behind the Scenes of Curbly.com: Capree’s Whole-Home Office

by on Jan 31, 2011

In the final days of our “Work_____” series, we thought it was only fair to give you a tour of the offices, studios, and desks of the folks that make Curbly happen. So, have a peek at the spaces where our articles are researched and written, photos shot and edited, mistakes made, things learned, and the DIY community built.

Name: Capree Kimball
Location: Salt Lake City, UT

What sort of activities or projects do you work on in this space?
I consume many a tasty foodstuffs (it’s our dining / living room after all)!  Also, I write, write, write, tweet, obsessively check the weather, and a myriad of other blogger-related activities.  When holidays and birthdays roll around, I bust out my ever-growing stash of ribbons and paper and wrap my little heart out.

What’s your key to staying organized and productive?
As far as productivity goes, I’m a bit of a restless soul, a nomad if you will, so I need to move around a lot.  I usually start out at the dining table then move to the lounge chair or couch as the day progresses.  If it’s a particularly cold day, I seek warmth upstairs and work from the comfort of our “purple people eater” aka “the wool monster” aka our fake Womb Chair.  I take a lot of breaks during the day as well, which usually include playing with my dog or going on soda runs.

Most of what I do is online, so I use Teux Deux to keep track of tasks as well as the indispensable Google Calendar.  I’m a huge list person, so you’ll find post-it notes and scraps of paper with random lists scattered around the house.  Not super organized, but it works for me.

What’s a feature of your workspace you couldn’t live without?
Sunlight.  Oh, and my dog.

If you had one wish to grant your office, what would it be?
I don’t really use an office, but my entire house.  I suppose my wish would be a never-ending supply of caffeine, which I’m already pretty on top of (it’s my secret weapon).

Do you work in other spaces than this? Other rooms in your home? Coffee shops or public places?
I work all over my home, though I never work from bed.  I technically have an “office” but we’re in the process of turning it into a guestroom and I never use it (which is partially why we’re using the space for a different purpose)!  It’s in transition now, so it’s half guestroom, half book pile, half un-used desk.  As far as working from public spaces goes, I’ve tried my hand at the coffee shop / wi-fi hot spot approach and I think I just spent the entire day staring at people instead of actually working.

How do you balance workspace vs. home life? Do you keep them separate, or is it all just part of your life?
I try to stick to a 10am-6pm / Monday-Friday schedule, to keep myself focused and to dedicate the rest of my evenings and weekends to my home life.  When you work from home, it’s easy to get sucked into it at any time, say when you “just want to check your email” at 10:30 at night.  I try to avoid that rabbit hole and close my laptop at 6 or 7pm and then don’t touch it until the morning.

Do others in your home use this space? Often? For what activities?
Yes!  I use my whole house as an ‘office’, but when I’m done for the day or week, it turns back into a home (with the usual home-related activities, namely cooking and watching a lot of movies with my husband and/or friends).
