If you could only makeover one room in your home, which room would you choose?

A few months back, we took a poll over on our Facebook page asking this question and the kitchen was the most common answer — by a landslide. While kitchen makeovers can be one of the most expensive home improvement projects you’re likely to tackle, it is possible to breathe new life into your space without breaking the bank.

So, if a kitchen makeover is next up on your to-do list, check out these five money-saving tips before you start!

Cabinets

It’s not always necessary to tear out your existing cabinetry! Before splurging on custom cabinets, consider resurfacing or painting your existing cabinetry.

Resurfacing involves hiring a professional, who will apply a veneer (in whatever wood species your heart desires) to the cabinet boxes and make new doors to match. If you opt to paint, you can save even more — this is an easily DIYable project! Be sure to use quality materials, then check out our tutorial for painting kitchen cabinets.

You can also spruce up cabinets for cheap by simply switching out the hardware or adding new knobs, giving them a deep cleaning, adding molding and trim, or even replacing the door panels.

Counters

Love the look of granite, but hate the price? Consider laminate! This material has come a long, long way since it was first introduced. Companies like Wilsonart are pushing the boundaries of laminate with innovative new options. Consider their Wilsonart® HD® High Definition® Laminate Collection, which has the look of granite at a fraction of the cost. With decorative edges, seamless surfacing, and integrated sink options, you can give your kitchen a significant update at a fraction of the cost.

Floors

Wood floors can be rejuvenated without being replaced. You can refinish them yourself fairly easily and re-staining them a new color may be all you need to make the room feel brand new.

If your floors are flat and in good condition, vinyl tiles, sheet flooring, or wood laminate are all affordable options for updating your kitchen floors.

Walls

Sometimes, all a room needs to feel new is a paint job! Consider updating your color scheme and painting your walls a fresh, new hue. Bring in a few decorative accessories to complement the new wall color. If you have a window in your kitchen, replace the window treatment with a custom window shade in a fun pattern or color that fits your updated color scheme. Here’s an easy-to-follow tutorial for making your own roman shades.

Adding a backsplash is also an easy and inexpensive way to update your kitchen. There are many affordable options, from ceramic subway tile to glass panels or even just painting a faux backsplash in a contrasting color. Depending on the size of your kitchen, you may be able to find enough material for the job in the remnant section of your local hardware store or tile dealer.

Appliances

Before you splurge on new appliances, consider refacing or painting your existing appliances. Refrigerators and dishwashers with frames have panels that can be replaced and there are panel kits available for other styles of appliances.

Appliances can also be painted with special appliance paint. Check out this tutorial for doing it yourself. If you’d rather have a professional tackle the paint job, Autobody shops and appliance refinishers can make your metal appliances look brand new for a few hundred dollars.
