Second hand stores, Craigslist, and yard sales are great sources for low-cost materials, but consider these less-obvious options.  The aforementioned pavement chunks?  Salvaged (with permission) during a neighbor’s garden remodel.  This slab of concrete was later transformed into an outdoor dining table – for free.

Want more ideas?  Old wooden spools become clever storage for a garden hose; boards salvaged from an old corral become a striking modern fence; boat paddles, driftwood, and flotsam become a quaint garden gate!  With some creativity, the possibilities are endless – and oftentimes free.

Sunset put together a fantastic roundup of over 20 “surprising salvage makeovers“, which the above projects come from.  Be sure to check them all out and tell us which thrifty idea is your favorite!  (Personally, I love the sewer pipe planters and the modern fence the most!)
