Craft It: A Robot Centerpiece for the 4th of July!

by on Jun 28, 2011

PatriBot 3000 is what I’m calling this quirky Fourth of July centerpiece.  With a belly full of cookies and a head full of forks, he’ll be the star of the festivities (after the fireworks, of course)!  Ready to make a DIY robot of your own?  Great.  Let’s get this freedom party started!

Mr. PatriBot would be a great craft to work on with the kids because, c’mon, what kid doesn’t love a robot?  They (and you!) will have fun putting all the parts together for what will no doubt be the coolest 4th of July centerpiece ever made.  You can build the bot using whatever supplies you have on hand, but FamilyFun Magazine suggests the following:

  • 2 cardboard tubes (toilet paper tubes, or wrapping paper tubes trimmed to about 5-1/2 inches)
  • 1 roll each of red, white, and blue duct tape
  • Clear 1-gallon, food-safe plastic pail (they got theirs from stampendous.com)
  • 2 (15-ounce) unopened cans of food, with labels removed (for weight)
  • Clean, empty metal can or plastic bucket (they used a 12-ounce peanut can)
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • 2 metal bottle caps

After you’ve gathered all your robot’s parts, head on over to FamilyFun for tips on how to put him together.  There are also some photos and comments from other proud PatriBot builders for more inspiration.
