How to: Make Golden Super Starburst Wall Art (for under $10.00)

by on Nov 7, 2011

Can you guess from what inexpensive material this starburst was made?

Hi, I’m Holly.First, let me say that I am super excited to be here on Curbly today for my very first guest blog post ever! Fingers crossed it all goes well….

So, I am a little obsessed (ok more like, a lot) with vintage sunbursts, starbursts, whatever you like to call them, wall art. I own some brass urchins that hang on my home office wall as well as a funky vintage starburst hanging planter that hangs on my bedroom wall. Oh, and a West Elm mirrored starburst hangs above my stove.  I even collect a certain brand of vintage mid-century dinnerware in a pattern called Franciscan Starburst:

You might think that’d satisfy me, but that is sooo not the case… I had the brilliant (if I do say so myself) idea of doing an installation of starbursts on one very empty wall in my home. So, being an interior design intern, this working for free thing is constantly keeping me budget conscious, I have been brainstorming lots of ways of creating some starbursts that are super duper cheap and awesome….  And I love my newest clothespin (oh yeah!!) creation to begin the installation!

So, if you love it too… here’s all you need:

Supplies and Tools (under $10):

  • 96 wood clothespins (I got mine at Kmart for a whopping $3.99 per pack of 96)
  • embroidery hoops (I had left overs from some wood veneer pendant lights I made a couple of months ago)
  • a can of spray paint (I used Rust-O-Leum Specialty Metallic paint in shiny gold)
  • thin wire

And here’s what you do:

  1. Clip the clothespins around the wooden hoops created at: 11/07/2011
  2. Spray paint the hoops with clothespins attachedcreated at: 11/07/2011
  3. Make it as big or small as you’d like, I originally planned on 2 hoops but got so excited I decided to use all 96 clothespins and add a 3rd! My final piece measures 20″ diameter
  4. Connect the hoops with thin wire

Hang this fabulous creation on the wall (you can connect the hoops with wire like I did or you can just scatter them on the wall if you so desire)!

And this could also be pretty awesome as a table centerpiece with a pillar candle set in the center (perfect for the coming holidays!) or you can set a round mirror in the center!

So, until tomorrow…..
