How to: Give Boring Closet Doors an Inexpensive, Architectural Makeover

When Janet Lee first moved into her tiny studio apartment, it was a blank box of white walls and neutral parquet floors. As a renter, she wasn't able to add any actual architectural details for visual interest, so she faked the look by bringing plenty of depth to her bland folding closet doors, creating an inexpensive and removable solution that anyone can do at home.

DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments

by Faith Provencher
DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments

I love the holidays for many reasons, but my favorite is that they give you a good excuse to get super crafty. So when I walked by the balsa wood section at my local craft store, the wheels started turning. I came up with a fun project that uses paint and metallic tape to create totally unique color blocked triangular ornaments. Keep reading to find out how to make them yourself!

Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

One of the greatest things about this project is that it uses wood but no saw. And while I have plenty of saws, I'm aware that not everybody does. So we'll use a plain old pair of scissors for this one.

DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments
Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

Here's what you'll need for your ornaments:

  • Thin balsa wood, 1/16" thick works well
  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Scissors
  • Bakers twine
  • Pencil
  • Paintbrush
  • Washi tape or blue painter's tape
  • Metalized polyester film tape (not pictured)
  • Hot glue gun
DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments

Begin by measuring out equilateral triangles on your balsa wood. Each edge of mine was 3.5 inches long.

DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments
Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

Using a sharp pair of scissors, cut out the triangles. Be gentle, because wood this thin can easily split along the grain.

DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments
Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

Trim off the tops so they resemble trapezoids as shown above, and mask off sections using washi or blue painter's tape. Paint one section a darker color and let it dry.

DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments
Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

Remove the first piece of tape and place another one across that section to mask off another area to paint a different color. Let that area dry too and remove the tape.

DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments
Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

Next, add a piece of metalized film tape across the area where the two colors meet. Trim the ends of the tape, leaving a bit of excess to fold onto the back side.

DIY Color Blocked Balsa Wood Ornaments
Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

Put a small line of hot glue across the top of the ornament, as neatly as you can. Quickly attach a piece of twine and let it dry. Then tie a knot at the top so the twine creates a triangle shape that completes the triangle formed by the wood.

Photo: Faith Towers Provencher

And you're finished! I love the way the hanger integrates into the ornament, forming the top part of the triangle.

The tape gives them a fun pop of metallic color, giving them some serious style. You could try making these with other paint colors too, for a completely different look. Have fun with it!

How to: Make a Simple Built-In Bench for Extra Storage

by Lidy Dipert

We'd had enough of our dated kitchen, so we decided to give it a full-on facelift, while staying on a budget. Follow along with our whole series: Lidy's Kitchen Makeover.

How to: Make a Simple Built-In Bench for Extra Storage

One of the more practical issues we faced with our current kitchen was inadequate storage. Because installing more cabinets was a bit out of our budget, we decided to make a simple built-in bench for a two-for-one punch: a place to sit AND a place to put things. Bonus!

materials

  • 2x4s (we used 6)
  • One sheet 1/2" Plywood
  • Miter Saw
  • Kreg pocket hole jig
  • Drill
  • Kreg right angle clamp
  • Table saw
  • Brad nailer
  • Wood glue
  • Round-over router bit
  • Palm sander (in medium and fine grit)
  • Stud Finder
  • 2.5” Wood screws
  • Pocket hole drill
  • Caulk
  • Paint (same as walls)
  • Hinges (including accessories)
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring Tape
  • Tack cloth

A note before we begin: The finished dimensions of the bench were 18”X18”X60”, since the 2x4 frame needed to be slightly shorter due to the 1/2” plywood on the sides, front, and top (actual dimensions of a 2X4 are 1.5X3.5”).

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

First, using your miter saw, cut the 2x4s to length. You will need:

  • 4 X 59”
  • 6 X 10.5”
  • 5 X 14.5”

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Using a Kreg pocket hole jig, drill holes for assembly.

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Use a kreg right angle clamp to stabilize the 2x4.

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Attach with pocket hole screws to construct the frame of the bench (refer to picture below).

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Repeat until complete.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Using 1/2” Plywood for the walls of the bench, cut with table saw accordingly:

Sides: 2 X 17.5X17.5"

Front: 1 X 17.5X60”

Top: 1 X 62X19” (1” overhang on sides and front)

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Cut a 3/4” strip off the top with table saw to accommodate hinges. We chose 3/4” hinges so that both sides of the joint are supported by the 2X4 underneath. Trim the overhang off of this thin strip so that the ends are flush to sides of the bench (60”).

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Use wood glue and a brad nailer to attach the plywood front, sides, and 3/4” hinge strip.

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Use a round-over router bit and rout all edges of the bench and lid to prevent splintering.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Use a palm sander to sand entire project. Medium grit first, then fine grit. Wipe down with tack cloth.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Use a stud finder to mark studs in the walls. Place the bench where it belongs and mark and drill pilot holes for the screws to anchor the bench to the wall studs and the sub-floor. We used 2.5” wood screws and the pocket hole drill bit for pilot holes.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Caulk seams and nail holes and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Allow to dry.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Paint bench and lid separately, allowing to fully dry between coats.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Mark holes for attaching hinges to bench and lid.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Drill pilot holes.

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Use screwdriver to fasten (avoid stripping, tear-out).

Step

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Finish off bottom of bench with painted baseboards in conjunction to the rest of the wall using a brad nailer. Caulk seams and nail holes and touch up with paint.

How to: Make a Simple Built-in Bench for Extra Storage

Having a built-in bench is a game changer for our little kitchen nook. It provides enough extra seating for 2-3 people and plenty of storage for all our many pots, pans and more. Just one more little DIY that you don't want to miss before the big reveal, so stick around!
