So one of the five projects I contributed to Make It! Secondhand Chic is an embroidered boxes how-to, which includes two of my original embroidery patterns. I purchased the wooden 7 1/2" x 11 3/4" backgammon set pictured above to include in the tutorial, but my idea of turning it into a pencil box didn't really fall into the how-to's category, which was 'The Bathroom', unless, of course, you're in the habit of sketching in the tub. Before we started working on the new entry into the Curbly Make-It! library, Make It! Secondhand Chic, I was telling a friend of mine my plans for hitting secondhand shops. He said, 'You gotta go to Ax-Man.' I had heard of the local Ax-Man stores, but only knew that they were outlets for surplus items, a sort of limbo for nearly secondhand. I'd never actually visited one, much to the dismay of the creator of Curbly, I might add. So, last week I decided to grab my camera and go on a fact-finding mission.

Suitcase Side Table

One of the 14 original projects in Make It! Secondhand Chic, is a circa 1970's suitcase turned side table, but its maker, Chris, gave it that fresh mid-mod vibe that we've come to expect from him. In this option, an old folding director's chair serves as the legs of the side table while the vintage suitcase on top gives the whole look a steampunk feel.
