How to: Make a Vintage-y Button Pillow

This fall, FabricDirect.com is sponsoring a series of fabric-based DIY projects on Curbly!

This summer, while my boo and I were exploring one of our state's many charming and historic little towns, we happened to stop in at an antique and consignment shop. My 'pass' radar went up fairly quickly, but I did the cursory scan just to be polite. I was just about to turn tail and head out the door when my very observant boo said, "Look at this." He pointed to something I hadn't seen before and can only describe as a sack-like, vintage-y button pillow. I replied in a whisper--because that's what you do when you discuss knocking something off you see in a store--"I can totally make that!" Thus, the seed for this project was planted. I didn't have any specific fabrics in mind...until I scanned the selection at Fabric Direct. It was within their inventory that I found the perfect textiles for the job. So, how do we make one of these babies, and how can you get a 20% discount on the supplies? Read on!

How to: Make a Mondrian-ish Patchwork Pillow

How to: Make a Mondrian-ish Patchwork Pillow

This fall, FabricDirect.com is sponsoring a series of fabric-based DIY projects on Curbly!

Did you hear that? Piet Mondrian just rolled over in his grave. (Either that or my cat fell off the chair on which she's napping.) Some of you may remember that I made a pillow based on the artist's iconic Composition II in Red, Blue and Yellow in the fabulous Curbly title, Make It! Midcentury Modern. That interpretation was a, more or less, one-for-one fabric reinterpretation. For this new version, I decided to go a bit more lighthearted with what might be called Patchwork in Red, Blue and Yellow.

5 Modern Pillow Tutorials to Freshen Up your Decor

I don't know about you, but those winter blues have flown out the window now that warmer weather has set in.  And in my neck of the woods, it is hot weather.  With the changing of the seasons, I feel like my whole condo needs a facelift to change along with the temperature.  With a very limited redecorating budget (the husband says he'd rather eat, phaw!) I figure the best place to start is inexpensive throw pillows like a shag pillow made from recycled t-shirts or knit yardage?  Talk about comfortable!  V&Co shows us how to make it.  Here are a few more fun and modern pillow ideas for you to lean on.

Five Eames Chairs that Aren't Just for Seating

In my opinion, the most loved and easily recognized and furniture designers of the Mid-Century are Charles and Ray Eames.  Together, they had the Midas touch when it came to home furnishings; if the Eames' designed it, it became a classic.

If you aren't lucky enough to own an actual Eames Chair of any variety, how about using their images as decor?

DIY: Replacing Foam in a Lounge Chair Cushion

There's no question that down cushions are high-end and luxurious. The down side (ha! no pun intended) is that they lack resilience and don't provide the springiness many folks want in their seat. The problem with foam cushions is that they get compacted and crumbly after years of use.  Many people ask me how to change out their down cushions to foam, or just replace their flattened out foam cushions. To see a very DIY friendly,
