Cocktail Umbrella Lighting

Cocktail Umbrella Lighting

It’s not often that I’m completely bowled over by something I spot online, but today it happened. Heather Wells cocktail umbrella lights are not only beautiful; they’re also an unbelievably creative use of something so familiar! DIY-able? Probably, but I don’t want to go there. I want to put the spotlight on Heather Wells and her absolutely delightful creations. For more information, visit Heather's website, Bright Lights Little City.

The Tap Light

The Tap Light

Designer Rafael Morgan won third place in Design Bloom’s bright LED competition last month with ‘The Light Drop’. According to Morgan, the creation ‘was supposed to make people think about how we are dealing with our natural resources, in this particular case, the water, which is the main source of energy for every living organism in this fantastic world.’ The fixture is wall-mounted and is dim-able via the tap as the ‘more you twist, the more...

Photography Lighting

by Mod Home Ec Teacher

I'm wanting to post my upholstery "how-to's" and I want them to look "clean" and crisp and professional.  Does anyone know where I can find easy to understand information on lighting the area I'm photographing as well as taking professional looking photographs of the finished product.  I have a great photoprapher, but he is going to get expensive every time I need to get a piece of furniture photographed.  I would like this to be

 something I can...

Turn your blown bulbs into fabulous light fixtures!

Turn your blown bulbs into fabulous light fixtures!

Bulbs Unlimited has created a kits that allows you to turn your old, blown, incandescent light bulbs into very cool light fixtures. Using the kit’s ‘Inkubator’ template, you mark the blown bulbs with a pen, glue snaps at the marks and then snap your bulbs together like Legos, making bulb shades, as it were. Fix them all together with a nylon strap, which you slip over the lamp ring holder. And voila, very cool lighting effects. Grow tired of your...

DIY-able Take Away Lamp

DIY-able Take Away Lamp

Sigurdur Gustafsson’s Take Away Lamp ($84) is made of fiberglass fabric. It measures 38cm by 32 cm and is illuminated by a 25 watt bulb. Okay, is this DIY-able or what?? The trick would be to get your hands on some fiberglass fabric, which just happens to be available online at TAP Plastics. A lightweight plain weave in a 50" by one linear yard piece will set you back 10 bucks. I'd treat it like a heavy upholstery fabric, as far as my sewing...

Nick Foley’s Amazing Pear Light

Nick Foley’s Amazing Pear Light

The industrial designer’s Pear Light might just look like a very pretty lamp at first glance, but it’s much more than that. Why? The hand forged tree is actually a charging station for the pear lights. ‘Each pear contains ten ultrabright white LEDs, an autonomous charging circuit, and rare-earth magnets that allow it to be "picked" from the tree and remain fully illuminated for over an hour.’ Amazing, huh?

Convert A Tripod Into A Floor Lamp

If you come across an old tripod at a tag sale, buy it. They make fabulous floor lamps! Converting one doesn’t even need a how-to; just a lamp kit and a shade. My entire project cost about 25-30 bucks when all was said and done.

How to make your own ‘Ambilight’ television.

by DIY Maven

Phillips 47PFL7432D/37

Have you seen those advertisements for Phillips’ Ambilight plasma televisions? Although it’s probably just a gimmick, I was intrigued by the idea. Lit from behind my LCD’s screen wouldn’t be compromised by glare, and it would add needed light/drama to the room. I found something at my local big box store called Auralites, which are manufactured for under-shelf accent lighting applications. They, however, were just the thing I was looking for.

I...

Goodbye Ugly Speakers! Hello Soundolier!

Goodbye Ugly Speakers! Hello Soundolier!

If you’re like me and think speakers are, well, generally speaking, ugly, take a look at the Soundolier. The floor lamp/cordless speaker combo would make Edison and Marconi proud–and possibly a bit envious. I’ve seen prices quoted around 379 a pop with a 79 dollar wireless audio transmitter option which lets you stream iPods and such. Now if it would only be an air cleaner as well....

242 bucks for a can of soup?

242 bucks for a can of soup?

Okay, Ingo Maurer’s canned light doesn’t actually contain soup. What it does contain is all the parts to make a lamp, parts we can probably find at any hardware or big box store. Those items include a reflector, socket, switch and a 60 watt halogen light bulb. The can itself measures 5.3" h x 3.4" d. A quick measurement of my Campbell’s Tomato tells me a regular-sized can measures 3.875" h x 2.5", which might be a bit small for a DIY job, but how...

DIY Paper Wall Lamp

Instructables is featuring this Paper Wall Lamp by naedhi, who used everyday materials, such as sketchbook paper, stapler, scissors and Elmer’s glue, to construct it. The lights themselves are the very versatile LED rope variety, which produce very little heat, making the project not only beautiful but non-flammable too. (Good to know.)

Shadow Play With Adam Frank

Shadow Play With Adam Frank

The artist and inventor who gave us LUMEN™ light projectors has created yet another glorious ambient lighting wonder. It is REVEAL™, and basically it is a projector, which can be mounted to a ceiling or wall, that casts the impression of a window with light streaming through it. REVEAL™ also throws shadows through the ‘window’ that form outlines of tree branches seen in the distance. To complete the illusion, the branches sway ever so slightly...
