10 DIY Dresser Makeovers To Die For

10 DIY Dresser Makeovers To Die For

There's something quite beautiful about the fact that almost any old dresser can be turned into your own personal work of art. They're essentially a blank canvas waiting for an inspired transformation. Often, the hardest part is seeing beyond the chipped paint and missing hardware to where you can take that thing. Whether it's plain or fancy, painted or stained, here are 10 statement making dresser makeovers to inspire (well, only nine fit in my collage so you'll have to read on through to see the tenth one).

Here's a few tools and materials to get started:

  • small sander or sand block or plain old sandpaper
  • clean rags
  • stain blocking primer
  • paint or stain
  • wood filler
  • putty knife
  • screwdriver
  • wood glue
  • modpodge
  • masking tape
  • ruler, yardstick
  • hardware cleaner or new hardware
  • wallpaper or decorative paper
  • hammer and small finish nails
  • polyurethane or other sealers
  • wood cleaner (like Formby's)

OK, ready to go?

From left to right, top to bottom:

1. A Green MCM Dresser Re-do- Nikol from Decor Scout used contact paper, green paint and glossy cream paint to turn a leftover '60's dresser into a sharp looking standout. The stained Before dresser aint too shabby either. I'll have to admit, I respect people's desire to paint wood.

2. Knack Studio's Black Dresser-Barb Blair can take any old dresser and turn it into an artistically charmed looking antique. The off center design is right up my alley.

3. Lindsay's Ten Wooden Knobbed Dresser Upgrade-You don't have to spend multiple weekends and lots of cash on a dresser re-do. Here, Lindsay saw an inspirational dresser and then cleverly translated it over to her found dresser. And I mean found on the side of the street-FREE.

4. A Well Traveled Dresser-A ModPodge delight. The geographical treatment makes this dresser fit for any kid's or guest room.

5. The De-Frumpified Bombay Chest makeover-The silver leaf treatment turned these two $75.00 spinsters into Glam Girls.

6. Misty's Bird Wallpaper ModPodge Dresser-ModPodge is a miracle. You can add all sorts of visual treats to a dresser using the oh-so-versatile ModPodge.

7.  Union Jack Dresser-What can you say? This stunning dresser could command the entire british empire. You just have to go see how Meranda Snyder from French Provincial Furniture turns provincial wallflowers into true works of art.

8. Repainted Tiffany Blue Nursery Dresser-Repainting painted dressers takes a little know how too. See how this mainstream French Provincial dresser went uptown with Tiffany Blue.

9. $20.00 Paint and Stain Combo -Over on Young House Love, paint and stain partnered on this $20.00 Craigslist find. The combo finish is one of my favorites. For some reason, dressers made during this time period did a lot of solid wood drawer fronts (too nice to paint) with that horrid laminate top (too ugly not to paint).

10. Ikea Malm Dresser Makeover- Here's Number 10. Worth the wait, eh? Over on Houzz we see that you can turn an Ikea mainstay into pure, sophisticated glam. Check out the lucite knobs from Anthropologie!

Decorating Challenge: Small Budget, Big Personality

Decorating with a student budget didn't stop Chicagoans Meg and Brad from transforming their 900 square foot apartment into a space full of style and personality.  These "colorful collectors" were able to create a completely unique and inspiring space - and stay in budget - with a little DIY ingenuity and a knack for finding hidden Craigslist gems.  But, their growing art collection is what really makes this space come alive.

Turn a Pine Dresser Into a Silver Leaf Bedside Table

You know how it goes. Family's coming in town for the holidays, you've thrown your junk into the sparsely furnished spare bedroom and now you're scurrying to spruce up the joint. One thing you'll need to win over your mother-in-law is a bedside table instead of a t.v. tray. Grab an old junker at Goodwill, Salvation Army, or a thrift store and quickly get to work. Here's what you need:

Hot & Cool Bed Ideas

A bed isn't a bed isn't a bed, anymore. Take a look at some alternatives to grandma and grandpa's mattress and box springs combo. As long as you get a good night's sleep, who's to say a teepee bed isn't good for your back?

All you have to do is prime the pump of your own creative juices to come up with a new bed design and make sure you can sleep on it. As you see, these all tend to be hanging hammock styles.

For colder nights, set up a bed shelf next to the fireplace for the cozy, cabin feeling.
