what a lot to go through but i know what it's like to want to save a family piece.  i have a bookcase that my father made when he was on a ship 50 years ago in the Navy, vaguely mission styled in appearance.  there's some laminated striped panels on the front.  it's pretty cute but when you look on the  back you can see it was finished off with some old US navy packing crates on the back.  he said they used whatever wood was left over on the ship.  now i feel motivated to scrape off that glue and fix the gamey leg on the back.

@Rasmus--I used waterbased, indoor/outdoor enamel that I found at my local TrueValue, brand name Premium Decor.

@meerkat11--Thanks! Glad you like it.

I'm looking to do something similar to an old bench of mine- I'd like to turn it into a planter for the front porch.

This really is a very good post, and an excellent tutorial. What kind of paint was it? Oil or acrylic?

this is a fantastic tutorial.  I am planning to recreate these on some chunky floating shelves in my house.

thanks
