How to: Give Your Space a Scandinavian- Inspired Vibe with Removable Wallpaper

by on Feb 22, 2017

Not too long ago, we gave our family room a mini makeover. But it didn’t feel quite like us or flow well with the rest of our home. We love all things Scandinavian-inspired and I knew that I wanted the space to feel cozy and welcoming. Before, our space felt a bit blunt and loud. Our geometric painted wall was one of the first things that caught your eye in the space and I wanted to finally get rid of the turquoise color, which was never really my favorite anyway. I didn’t want to have to paint all over again, so we decided to bring in a black and white Scandi-inspired removable wallpaper instead! It’s pretty amazing how doing something so simple to your walls can change the overall vibe of a room. Best part is, removable wallpaper gives you the option to change things up again when you get tired of the print without damaging walls or making anything too permanent.  This is a great option for renter-friendly DIYs too!

  • Removable Wallpaper (you can research to find the best option for yourself – there are so many to choose from around the web!)
  • Chalk-line

  • Scissors

We started by giving the wall and base boards a quick wipe down. Then we measured the the width of the first wallpaper panel. We marked the measurement on the wall and made a chalk-line on the wall for reference.

Carefully remove the backing of the first panel and starting at the top, place on the wall according to your guide. This is definitely a two-person job, so don’t be afraid to ask for a bit of help. If there is a lot of excess wallpaper at the bottom, simply remove with scissors. Be sure to leave a bit of overhang in case you need to adjust as you go.

Once the first panel is on securely and properly, begin working out any air bubbles, by pushing them outward. You can use your hands or even a flat plastic object. Be careful not to tear the wallpaper if using any tools. Then, using an X-acto knife, remove excess wallpaper along the edges.

Repeat for remaining wall panels.

This is a great option if you’re looking for a fun change in any space in your home. You can choose designs that are as safe or crazy as you want, with no regrets! Which is always the best part when working with removable wallpaper. Our family room definitely has a more unified look and I am so happy with the results.
