$1 DIY: How to Make Fun + Colorful Easter Baskets from Dollar Store Pots

by on Apr 4, 2017

I love a good bargain! With Easter coming up, it’s time to start shopping for Easter gifts and treats to fill Easter eggs, but that can get expensive fast. My family hosts an Easter egg hunt every year, and I think these simple dollar DIY Easter baskets made from Dollar Store plastic pots are the perfect way to get a homemade touch without a lot of money or work. Use them to hunt for eggs or fill with grass and goodies for a homemade gift!

You will need a drill for this project in order to drill holes in the pots as well as some rope, which I recommend purchasing at a local craft store. Don’t worry, the rope is also very inexpensive. Then use paint, vinyl or other supplies to decorate the baskets as you’d like, or even let your kids have fun decorating their own Easter basket.

I found these colorful plastic pots at my local Dollar Store and they turned out to be the perfect size for this project!

Materials:

  • Plastic garden pots or similar
  • Rope, about .25 inches thick
  • Drill with various drill bit sizes
  • Tape
  • Paint or vinyl for decorating

Step

First, mark where the holes will go, about 2 inches from the top and directly across from each other. Attach the smallest drill bit to your drill and very slowly and carefully drill from the inside of the pot to make a very small hole.

Step

Repeat with a slightly larger drill bit, drilling from the outside now, and so on until the hole is large enough for the rope to fit through (about .25 inches). Following this progression will prevent the plastic from cracking under too much pressure from the drill.

Step

Wrap the end of the rope with tape and thread through the outside of the hole. Tie a knot on the inside to secure. (Wrapping the rope simply makes it easier to fit through the drilled holes and reduces fraying)

Step

Leave about 1 foot of slack for the handle and repeat by threading the opposite end of the rope through the other side of the pot and knotting it on the inside. This should allow it to hold enough weight for an Easter basket.

Step

Next, decorate! In one example, you can see I cut “Hoppy Easter” out of vinyl and stuck it to the pot.

In the second example, I used the leftover cutout of the vinyl letters as a stencil for paint. If you cannot find a pot in a color you like, you can also spray paint the entire piece prior to beginning this project. Either of these decorating ideas will be very quick!

Once you’re done decorating, simply fill with Easter grass and small gifts or candy, or give these to your little ones to take on an Easter egg hunt!

Either way, these Dollar Store Easter baskets are very inexpensive to make and fun to customize when you want a homemade touch.
