Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about your costume if you haven’t already. I’ve made my own costumes as far back as I can remember (starting with my “lady ghost” costume when I was 4), and this year is no different. Today I’m sharing a fun tutorial for a poker face costume, with a DIY fascinator hat. Click through to check out all the details.

The look is mostly black and white, with a few pops of red for dramatic effect.

Let’s begin by making our fascinator style hat. Cut a felt circle that is about 7 inches in diameter, and cut one slit to the center point as shown above.

Overlap the cut edges by 2 inches and glue in place, so it forms a wide cone shape.

Cut a piece of tulle that’s 12 x 24 inches. Gather one of the short ends into a bunch and glue it to the felt cone as shown above.

Before you finish gluing the rest of the tulle down, you’ll want to make your wire playing card holders. Cut five pieces of 9 inch long wire. Twist the bottom of one into a small loop and poke it through the point of the cone. Repeat with the other four wire pieces.

Pull all of the wires taut so that the loops are all positioned at the top of the cone. Squirt a ton of glue inside and around the loops so that everything stays put. Let it dry. Continue wrapping the tulle around the top of the hat and then gather and glue the end on the underside of the hat.

Create small loops at the top of the wires which are now sticking out of the top of the hat, and glue the playing cards to those loops. Make sure they all face forward. I chose an ace, king, queen, jack and ten of hearts to form what is called a “royal flush” in poker.

The last step is to glue the rose to the top of the hat.

Next, put on your outfit and begin your makeup. Paint your face and lips white, and then use eyeliner pencil to draw a diamond around one eye. Use black eyeshadow on your eyelid and then fill in the rest of the diamond with eyeliner. Covering the eyeliner with eyeshadow will give it a darker look. Then draw a heart, club and spade on your cheek with eyeliner. Paint your other eyelid white and then finish both eyes with mascara.

Use bright red lipstick to draw a heart on your lips, and paint your fingernails red. Put your fascinator hat on, securing it with a couple of bobby pins.

The costume is one part creepy, one part beautiful… and people will get a kick out of the name. Lady Gaga would be proud!

To get the full effect, try not to smile… you are supposed to have a poker face after all! Plus, you’ll want that fun heart to be recognizable on your lips.
