For this project, you’ll create a piece of hand-printed fabric that you will then attach to an existing memo board. It’s a great way to customize a boring piece, giving it lots of personality. So let’s get started!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Existing memo board
- White cotton fabric
- Scrap cardboard
- Brush-on fabric paint (not dimensional paint)
- Painter’s tape
- Paint brush
- Ruler
- Staple gun (not pictured)
Begin by cutting a piece of fabric that is two inches wider than your memo board on all sides. Then attach strips of painter’s tape to the fabric, spacing it out by about two inches. Do this all the way across your piece of fabric. Press the edges of the tape down firmly so they are securely attached to the surface of fabric.
Next, put a piece of cardboard underneath your fabric. For the fabric paint, I used Soft Matte Fabric Paint by Tulip in a color called Poppin Purple (not sure why, because it’s pink in my opinion). Squirt a bit of it onto the cardboard and begin painting semi-circles underneath the top piece of painter’s tape.
Chances are, the paint will go through the fabric and it dries quickly so make sure to lift up the fabric from the cardboard each time you do a semi-circle, otherwise it will get stuck to the cardboard. Trust me.
Let the paint dry thoroughly and then remove the tape.
Remove your memo board from its frame (if it has one) and center the fabric on the front. Carefully flip it over and staple the edges on the back with a staple gun. Put a staple every couple of inches.
Put the board back inside the frame, and hang it on the wall… and your memo board is complete!
The pop of color will add some serious style to your workspace, and the hand painted pattern will add a whimsical touch.
Feel free to experiment with colors and patterns… or you might even try a beige or light gray fabric for a different feel. The possibilities are endless!
