Making a First Home a Weekend Home

by on Sep 15, 2010

Christina and John wanted to buy a house, but they were priced out of the NY real estate market, so they decided to buy a weekend house for their first house.

Located in Sparrow Bush, NY, the home had been unoccupied for two years and needed significant TLC. The couple fell in love with it anyway and scooped it up for $95K last September. Their remodeling budget was a skimpy $10K and their deadline was equally tight: they wanted it done by their wedding date, May 23rd, as they planned to host the event on the property.

They did their remodeling on the weekends, which included just about everything except the roof. That they left to the pros. And, get this, they used Craigslist, garage sales, street finds and the like to furnish the home for a frugal $2,352. The result? A lovely weekend home that was the perfect setting for their nuptials. Congratulations Christina and John!
