One of the projects that I contributed to Curbly's Make It! Secondhand Chic featured the above side table. I snagged it at a local thrift shop for about 4 bucks. (The reason it was so inexpensive, I assume, was because the marble top was chipped and fractured. Good for me, because I didn't want the top anyway. The simple cherry wood bottom was all I wanted.) My first thought was to make a frame for the top, paint it up and then tile the center. But since tiled table top tutes are a-plenty, I decided to do something different. To find out what I did for the table's first makeover, you'll have to buy Make It! SHC. However, after finishing the project, my initial idea was STILL nagging at me. So I did what all crazy lovers of makeovers do, I made it over again.
I found some gorgeous 2" slate at my local tile shop, which set me back 9 bucks a square foot. A bit of mastic, grout, re-sanding, re-painting and about a half-dozen coats of satin Polycrylic and my first vision was realized.
