Ikea does Mid-Century Modern

by on Jan 7, 2010

When we think of Ikea, we probably think modern, affordable, flat-packed furniture. Of course not everything Ikea sells is flatly packed and some of it evokes a modern of the mid-century variety. Here’s a couple of cases in point. Pictured above is the Docksta Dining Table ($149) and below is Eero Saarinen’s white laminate Tulip Table ($1,543.00).

Not quite as similar to each other is Ikea’s version of Saarinen’s Tulip Chair. Saarinen’s creation is up first, which could set you back about $1,000 for the non-swivel version to $1700 for the swivel version:

And to And now Ikea’s version ($139), which does swivel and comes with a detachable pad:

If you don’t care for the pad the Ikea version comes with, you could always make a new one with the help of ModHomeEcTeacher’s tutorial featured in Make-It! Mid-Century Modern

Of course, not all people want furniture that looks like tulips. Ikea has those mid-century minded customers covered with their Stockholm Collection, which has a definite mid-century vibe. Here’s some offerings:

The Stockholm Easy Chair ($299):
